The plight of orphans in the developing world is dire. There are little or no government funds to sustain them, so orphanages simply cannot exist without the support of outside donors. In some areas of Southeast Asia the government gives only pennies a day to feed orphaned children. In Africa, due to the AIDS epidemic the number of orphans and destitute children has increased beyond the resources of existing agencies.
